The Cowey-Selman Kokoda Award is a scholarship to be made available to Year 11 students at Secondary Colleges throughout the Shire of Yarra Ranges. The scholarship will be very similar to the programs already offered in Cardinia, Baw Baw and East Gippsland shires. It will provide the younger Yarra Valley generation with an insight into the contribution to the Kokoda Campaign and the sacrifice made by men from the Yarra Valley community, notably Kokoda veterans Jim Cowey of Monbulk and Geoff Selman of Lilydale.
The scholarship will enable two Yarra Ranges’ students to walk the Kokoda Track with Getaway Trekking P/L in 2020. All costs, except spending money, will be provided.
The award has been organised by a committee made up of representatives from the 39th Battalion Association and the Mt Evelyn, Lilydale and Monbulk RSL clubs. This program would not have been possible without the enthusiasm and support of the RSL clubs.
We are very fortunate that LTCOL. Kate Holbeck, CO of the 39th OSB, will visit from New South Wales to launch the scholarship at a special ceremony at the Education Centre, Kokoda Memorial in the Dandenong Ranges National Park on Friday November 8th 2019 at 11.00am.
