Two Events Coming Up
1st Event –
We have received an invitation to attend the Waurn Ponds War Memorial 100th Anniversary dedication. Waurn Ponds is where Tim Firzgeral’s grandfather came from and his name is on the memorial and on the school honour roll in the hall. Descendants’ families have been asked to lay a wreath so Tim will do this, with the card highlighting the 39th AIF.
From the local committee –
“The Waurn Ponds Memorial Reserve Committee of Management invites everyone to attend a memorial service to honour those that served in War for Australia. The Service will commence at 10:45am on Sunday 1st July 2018. The Waurn Ponds Memorial Reserve is located on the corner of Cochranes Road and Waurn Ponds Drive, Waurn Ponds.
There will be a march before the service. If anyone is wanting to march please let us know. No parking along Cochranes Road and only on Waurn Ponds Drive.
The Geelong Military Re-enactment Group will fire a 25 Pound Gun Salute. After the Service Light Refreshments will be served in the Waurn Ponds Hall. Please bring a plate to share and also a gold coin donation will be appreciated.”
2nd event – Ross Creek Avenue Of Honour Re-dedication. 18th August 2018
The Ross Creek Avenue of Honour in 100 years old on 18 August and the locals are replanting some trees and unveiling a sign for the avenue and the 20 men who enlisted from the school on 18 August at 11.00am.
Two are 39th Battalion men;
440, LCpl George Washington Ellsworth, (accidental death, Heath Cemetery, Picardie France), and
20175, Private Gordon Evan Flockhart (RTA June 1918).
The 39th’s banner will be at the dedication.
Ross Creek is between Sebastopol and Smythesdale, just 15 minutes drive out of Ballarat, Vic.”
Be mindful that it is the 18th of August outside Ballarat, so if anyone from the association is coming please dress for very cold weather.
