Description

Forward with the Fifth by A. W. Keown and revised by Carl Johnson

“This is a beautifully presented reference publication of the history of the Fifth Battalion from birth until the armistice in 1918. All 5900 that served from 1914- 1919 are listed by number, rank and name with honours and awards, coupled with some 180 ‘facial’ pictures of these warriors … ”

From a book review by J. R. Bertram, A.M.

The Fifth Battalion, sailed amongst the first contingent bound for Egypt; the original battalion participating in the history-making assault on the beaches of Gallipoli. They served throughout the Anzac campaign, returned to Egypt and then fought on the Western Front until November 1918. Of some 6000 who served between 1914 and 1919, more than 1000 died in active service. The battalion’s story is narrated by A. W. Keown, one of those 6000.
