The Broadwater-Southport Rotary Club created the Kokoda Memorial Wall monument in Cascade gardens on the Gold Coast in 2006 to recognise the events of 1942 where the 39th Battalion and PIB initially and then supported by the 2/14th and 2/16th Battalions, delayed the Japanese advance from the North on Port Moresby.
The web page (www.goldcoast.qld.gov.au ) for the Memorial Walk, Cascade Gardens Kokoda Wall receives an average of 5000 hits a week and makes the Wall one of the most popular tourist attractions on the Gold Coast. The Rotary Club, annually engages in a memorial event, at the Wall, to honour the events of 1942.
To assist in ongoing support for service men and women as well as Memorial Events, this year the Rotary Club are holding a Grand Dinner at Southport Yacht Club on the 20th of September with attendance a long list of celebrities including Film Maker Phil Avalon as well big name sporting identities and will include the drawing of the raffle for a Jet Ski.
